The military utilisation of animals on land includes just about every common animal on Earth.

Elephant Attack
On a sweeping ancient battle field of Macedonia, scores of soldiers stand on either side preparing to attack. Hundreds of dogs and dozens of Elephants are also in the ranks. Behind them, the Cavalry. The Elephants charge forward but as they do several soldiers on the opposing army step forward with squealing pigs in their arms. At the sight and sound of the Pigs, the Elephants rear and turn tail, charging back and striking out with their feet and tusks, killing and maiming their own

Dogs - The K9 Unit
The dog has proven itself one of the most reliable animals of all and is the earliest example of an animal trained to assist humans in combat. 'Dual Certified' the Dog is now most often employed in search and rescue operations.

Rats – Detecting the Detonator



Trained at Apopo in Tanzania, the Giant African Rat is trained to search for landmines with its keen sense of smell.

These same Rats are now also being utilised to smell the presence of tuberculosis in human blood samples.

HORSES FOR COURSES


Horses - Fight Instead of Flight
Horses do not naturally attack. The process of breaking a horses natural 'flight' response is long and complicated. At the Metropolitan Mounted Police Unit the process has been carefully refined.

Horses (as well as Camels, Oxen, Mules and Elephants) – Beasts of Burden
At different times in a multitude of wars, each one of these creatures have proven themselves far beyond expectation. Still, the horse remains the most utilised and useful animals of all time.



FACT OR FICTION?
It is said that an Elephant, while the largest of all, is one of the most easily spooked of all the animals. Reports exist of Elephants defeated on the battlefield, frightened by a variety of much smaller animals.
